On August 10, 2024, a video showing a man torturing a child was widely circulated on social media. The footage depicted an adult male wrapping a minor in a mosquito net and strangling him. The Uganda Police Force acted swiftly to identify and locate the source of the abuse, tracing the incident to Butabira village, Namabu ward, Nyenga Division in Buikwe District.
The investigation revealed that the perpetrator, Lukwago David, a 56-year-old peasant from Mbiko cell in Njeru municipality, is the father of the victim, Kyola Morgan, a 12-year-old student at Gods Way Nursery and Primary School.
According to reports, Lukwago had left Morgan alone in their Butabira village home for almost a month while he stayed with a concubine in Mbiko cell. During this period, Morgan was forced to seek food at a nearby church and lived with his uncle, Isma, in Butembe village.
On August 8, 2024, Lukwago returned to Butabira and found Morgan missing. After locating him playing football, Lukwago took him back home. However, Morgan managed to escape. The following day, Lukwago subjected Morgan to severe abuse, wrapping him in a mosquito net and hanging him from a tree.
Lukwago’s actions were described as unjustifiable and excessively harsh. Reports indicate that he often leaves Morgan with his younger brother while spending nights with his concubine.
Lukwago was apprehended by the Uganda Police on August 10, 2024, and is currently in custody. He will face charges related to child abuse and torture in court. The police urge the public to remain vigilant and support efforts to protect children’s rights as stipulated in the relevant laws.
