Former URA Staff Held on Charges of Massive Financial Loss

A former Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) employee, Aggrey Malongo, has been remanded in custody until September 2, 2024, facing charges of abuse of office and causing financial loss to the government. Malongo, 39, who resides in Mukono district, appeared before the Anti-Corruption Court under the supervision of His Worship Abert Asiimwe.

The state prosecution has alleged that between January and December 2021, Malongo, who was a tax officer at URA, manipulated the tax ledgers for 18 companies. This action is said to have resulted in a significant financial loss of UGX 10.523 billion to the government.

Malongo has pleaded not guilty to the four charges leveled against him. During the court proceedings, the Magistrate advised the prosecution to expedite the investigation to ensure a swift conclusion to the case. The Magistrate also suggested that Malongo might want to consider a plea bargain if there is substantial evidence against him.

Furthermore, the court issued a warning to Malongo against attempting to bribe any individuals to influence the case. His lawyers were instructed to bring substantial sureties when the case is next heard.
