Igara East MP Michael Mawanda, who has been on remand for more than two months, was granted bail today but remains defiant in the face of serious fraud allegations.

After being released on a cash bail of UGX 35 million, Mawanda, alongside three others, faces charges of defrauding UGX 3.4 billion intended for compensation to Buyaka Growers Cooperative Ltd. The cooperative had reportedly lost its property during President Yoweri Museveni’s bush war.

Despite the charges, Mawanda vowed not to refrain from his actions, stating, “I will start from where I stopped.” His remarks have left the public and authorities puzzled, sparking debates about his intentions—whether he plans to continue his alleged activities or pursue a different course.

Mawanda’s arrest has been mired in controversy. General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, son of President Museveni and a prominent military figure, claimed that Mawanda was arrested due to his support for Muhoozi’s purported presidential ambitions.

Muhoozi has accused Odrek Rwabwogo, President Museveni’s son-in-law, of orchestrating Mawanda’s arrest to frame him, describing Rwabwogo as a “thief” who deserves to be jailed instead.

This public exchange between Muhoozi and Rwabwogo has caused a rift within the First Family, escalating into a bitter feud that has spilled into the public arena. The spat has involved demeaning insults and accusations that have left many Ugandans concerned about the growing tensions and what appears to be a battle for President Museveni’s succession.

The “Mawanda saga” has captivated the nation’s attention, with many questioning the motivations behind the political maneuvering. As the drama unfolds, it remains to be seen how these power struggles will impact Uganda’s political landscape.

Observers suggest that Mawanda’s case could be a political ploy amidst a fierce rivalry between key figures in Uganda’s leadership.

Meanwhile, the judiciary’s handling of this high-profile case is being closely watched, as it has the potential to influence public perception and the future of political justice in Uganda.
