Mbarara University Lecturer Charged with Assaulting Maid in Boiling Water Attack

Atwongire Doreen, a 39 year old lecturer at Bishop Stuart University in Mbarara, has been charged with causing grievous harm to her 21 year old housemaid, Ninsiima Recheal. The incident took place on September 25, 2024, when Doreen returned home to find her child crying. According to reports, Doreen allegedly poured boiling water on Recheal when the maid attempted to explain the situation.

Following the incident, Recheal sought medical attention at a nearby clinic, where she was admitted overnight due to her injuries. The following day, she reported the assault to Katete Police, which led to Doreen’s arrest.




The police and community leaders have condemned the violence against domestic workers, emphasizing that every individual has the right to dignity, respect, and safety in their workplace. Authorities are urging anyone facing similar situations to report incidents of abuse to the police.




Advocacy groups continue to call for improved working conditions and protections for domestic employees to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
