(Agago) – A Special Forces Command (SFC) soldier, Private Bonny Ameny, is currently on the run after allegedly shooting three people dead and injuring two others in Agago district. The tragic incident occurred on October 20, 2024, in Ngora East Village, located in Parabongo sub-county, Agago. The victims have been identified as members of the same family.
According to the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), the victims of the fatal shooting were Santina Akidi, Jennet Apiyo, and Thomas Oringa, all from Ngora East Village. The shooting spree also left Sunday Apiyo, Blessing Agenorwot, and Charles Kidega wounded. The injured are currently receiving treatment at Dr. Ambrosoli Hospital in Kalongo.
The UPDF, through its spokesperson for the 5th Infantry Division, Lt. Col. Edrin Mawanda, condemned the act of violence, describing the incident as a case of severe misconduct. The army is cooperating with other security agencies in a joint investigation to apprehend Private Ameny, who remains at large.
The incident reportedly took place around midnight, and according to initial reports, it was triggered by a domestic dispute involving Ameny and his wife, Angom Betty. Betty had allegedly fled from Ameny, and he began a violent search for a man he believed was involved with her. In the process, Ameny is said to have opened fire on the family members.
The UPDF acknowledged the gravity of the situation and expressed regret over the loss of life, vowing to bring the perpetrator to justice. In his statement, Lt. Col. Mawanda assured the public that the army will not tolerate such misconduct and will ensure the soldier faces the full consequences of his actions. The joint operation between UPDF and other security agencies to locate and apprehend Private Ameny is ongoing, with investigations at the crime scene continuing.
While the motive behind the shooting is still under investigation, early findings suggest that it may have been fueled by a personal grievance. Authorities have emphasized the importance of a thorough investigation to determine the exact circumstances that led to the fatal attack. Residents in the area remain in shock as details of the tragic event continue to unfold.
This incident has raised concerns about the conduct of military personnel in civilian areas, with some calling for stricter measures to prevent such occurrences in the future. Security forces are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the swift apprehension of Private Ameny as the joint investigation proceeds.

The injured victims, Sunday Apiyo, Blessing Agenorwot, and Charles Kidega, are reportedly in stable condition, though they remain under medical observation. The local authorities, together with the UPDF, are providing support to the affected families.
