(Kampala) – The Uganda Police Force has confirmed that the death toll from the tragic accident in Kigogwa Town, along the Kampala-Bombo road, has risen to 15. The accident, which occurred on October 23, 2024, claimed 11 lives on the spot, with four more victims succumbing to their injuries in the hospital. A total of 24 individuals were injured, 15 of whom are currently in intensive care, while nine others are receiving treatment in a regular ward at Kirundu Hospital.
Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango stated that the identities of the deceased are still being verified through DNA testing, as several bodies remain unrecognizable. “We are working closely with the victims’ families and will release the bodies once identification is complete,” Onyango added.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation, and authorities are actively searching for the truck driver, who fled the scene. Police are gathering evidence and seeking witnesses to determine what led to the crash, which involved a truck that reportedly lost control and caused a pile-up of vehicles along the busy Kampala-Bombo highway.
The accident has left the community in shock, as families and friends await news of their loved ones. Hospitals are providing updates on the condition of the injured, while the police continue to coordinate with medical personnel to ensure that all victims receive the necessary care.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution, especially along major highways, to prevent similar tragedies. The police have also heightened road safety campaigns to address the rising number of road accidents in the country.
