UPDF Promises Justice After Soldier Murders Three Civilians

The Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF) has condemned the murder of three civilians by a soldier in Agago district and committed to supporting the victims' families.

(Agago) – The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has expressed deep regret and condemnation following a tragic incident in which a soldier shot and killed three civilians in Agago district. The incident occurred on October 20, 2024, around midnight in Ngora East village, Ngora Parish, Paimol Sub County.

Preliminary reports indicate that Private Amenoy Bonny, 45, a soldier from the UPDF, allegedly shot the victims during a violent outburst stemming from personal issues. Sources suggest that the soldier was in conflict with his wife, Angom Betty, who had left him, prompting him to seek retribution. In his search for her, Pte. Amenoy reportedly opened fire, resulting in the deaths of three individuals: Apiyo Sunday, 21, Akidi Santino, 47, and Ajalo Florence, 16. Their bodies have been transported to Dr. Amberossoli Memorial Hospital in Kalongo for postmortem examinations.

Two additional victims, Kidega Charles Kumakech, 47, and Apiyo Janet, 20, were injured in the incident. They have also been taken to Dr. Amberossoli Memorial Hospital for medical treatment. The hospital is providing further management for their injuries.

In response to the incident, the UPDF has condemned the soldier’s actions and expressed its commitment to bringing him to justice. The UPDF stated that a joint investigation with other security agencies is currently underway to locate Pte. Amenoy, who remains at large.

The UPDF has also pledged to support the families of the deceased. The military will take responsibility for the burial arrangements of the victims and cover the medical expenses for those injured in the attack.
