A South African woman, Onthatile Sebati, who orchestrated the murders of her parents, pregnant sister, and brother as a teenager, was sentenced to 25 years in prison by the Pretoria High Court. Her cousins, Tumelo and Kagiso Mokone, received life imprisonment for their involvement.

The sentencing was handed down on Tuesday afternoon following mitigation and aggravating arguments presented by the defense and the state.

Sebati is accused of planning the December 2016 murders of her parents, Constable Solomon Lucky Sebati and Mmatshepo, her 19-year-old pregnant sister, Tshegofatso, and her three-year-old brother, Quinton, at their home in Mmakau near Brits, North West.

Sebati, now 24, was only 15 years old when the crime was committed with the assistance of her cousins, Tumelo and Kagiso Mokone. She paid them R100,000 (South African Money)  from insurance payouts she received after the murders.

According to the state, Sebati confessed to the murder in 2021, leading to their arrests. She was under the influence of drugs when she revealed the details to other family members.

The state further revealed that Sebati had given her cousins her father’s gun the night before the murders. She granted them access to the house, and they went inside to shoot the entire family. As the cousins were about to flee, she asked them to shoot her in the thigh.

In January, the Pretoria High Court found Sebati and her co-accused guilty of four counts of murder, theft, robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of a firearm, and possession of ammunition.
