Chinese Auto Maker Great Wall Motor Company Launches in Uganda

Great Wall Motor Company (GWM) has officially launched its range of vehicles in Uganda through distributor Double Q, aiming to enhance the local automotive market.

(Kampala) – Great Wall Motor Company Limited (GWM), a prominent Chinese automobile manufacturer, has made its official entry into the Ugandan market. The announcement was made on Friday when Double Q, a well-known distributor of Sino trucks and Heli forklifts, declared itself the official distributor of GWM vehicles in Uganda, opening a showroom in Kampala.

During the launch event, Eng. Dr. Timothy Tibesigwa, the acting Chief Mechanical Engineer for the Ministry of Works and Transport, commended Double Q for their investment in Uganda, highlighting the economic contributions and employment opportunities it brings. “I thank you for investing in our economy and creating employment for many Ugandans. We pledge to support you,” he stated.

Eng. Dr. Tibesigwa also urged Ugandans to consider purchasing brand new vehicles rather than used ones. He emphasized that the benefits of new models go beyond just initial cost savings. “The choice between new and used cars remains a significant decision for many Ugandans,” he remarked. He urged the official distributors at Double Q to ensure that customers have access to genuine GWM vehicle spare parts and high-quality service, which are essential for the vehicles’ safety and longevity. “The availability of genuine parts is critical for performance and safety,” he added.

Bruce Lee, the Managing Director of Double Q, expressed enthusiasm about entering the passenger vehicle market, which complements their existing portfolio of trucks and heavy vehicles. He noted that this expansion will create new employment opportunities for Ugandans. “With the addition of the GWM brand to our Double Q family, we are creating new employment opportunities, enhancing skills, and promoting job creation,” Lee stated. He also thanked the Ugandan government for providing an enabling environment for their business operations.

The event showcased the GWM TANK 500, which was described as the flagship vehicle by GWM Sales Manager Steven Dumba. He characterized the TANK 500 as a powerful, all-terrain, off-road vehicle designed to deliver a safe, smooth, and exhilarating driving experience. “There’s been a gap in our auto industry. Customers have longed for better options, and we are here to provide a solution. Whether it’s a passionate driver who wants to add the TANK to their collection or a fleet owner seeking to reduce fuel and maintenance costs, we have something unique to offer,” Dumba explained.

Currently, Dumba noted that Ugandans purchase approximately 40,000 vehicles annually, with only 3,000 of these being brand new. The vast majority, over 90%, are used cars. He encouraged Ugandans to explore vehicle and asset financing schemes offered by banks to make brand new cars more affordable, countering the perception that new vehicles are out of reach for most buyers.
