Defence Attachés accredited to Uganda have commended the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces for their significant role in stabilizing the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo amid ongoing anti-terrorism efforts.

(Kampala) – A delegation of Defence Attachés representing various embassies in Uganda has expressed commendation for the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), particularly the Mountain Division, for their significant contributions to stabilizing the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This acknowledgment comes in light of the joint operation named Shujaa, which is a collaborative effort between the UPDF and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) aimed at combating the terrorist group Allied Democratic Forces (ADF).

The delegation, consisting of 16 Defence Attachés who are part of the Defence Attachés Association (DAA), visited the Mountain Division headquarters at Muhoti Barracks in Fort Portal City. During their visit, they received updates on the progress of the ongoing operations against the ADF. The team was led by Dean Col Patrick Nkaduda from the Kenyan Embassy, who articulated the attachés’ appreciation for the UPDF’s commitment to addressing global terrorism, remarking that the results of these efforts are becoming apparent.

The attachés expressed gratitude for the UPDF’s willingness to engage openly and cooperatively with them across various operational departments. They emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in the fight against global terrorism and pledged their support for the UPDF’s mission to eradicate the ADF and other terrorist organizations, underscoring the need to disrupt the funding and resources that empower these groups.

Col Godfrey Kyomuhendo, Commander of the UPDF Mountain Division, conveyed his thanks to the Defence Attachés for taking time from their schedules to visit and show interest in the fight against terrorism. He stated, “Fighting the ADF is not merely a UPDF/FARDC affair; it’s a collective responsibility. Your interest and support energize our moral spirit to combat this threat.”

Following the discussions, Col Kyomuhendo guided the diplomats to explore some of the picturesque tourist attractions in the area, including the breathtaking Rwenzori Mountain ranges and the hot springs of Semliki National Park.

The Defence Attachés expressed interest in organizing future visits to these sites with their families, further strengthening the bonds of cooperation between Uganda and their respective countries. Senior officers from the Mountain Division were also present during this engaging visit.
