(Kampala) – A joint police operation carried out by officers from the Kampala Central Police Station (CPS) on Tuesday morning resulted in the arrest of more than 30 suspected criminals. The operation was based on intelligence that identified the Container Village area in the city center as a hub for criminal activities. Known for its high crime rates, the location is a notorious hideout for gangs involved in narcotics use and planning criminal attacks on pedestrians.
The suspects, mostly young men between the ages of 19 and 35, were detained following a coordinated sweep of the area. According to Patrick Onyango, the spokesperson for the Kampala Metropolitan Police Area, the operation targeted individuals who were suspected of smoking marijuana and planning criminal activities. “Container Village is known to the security authorities for criminal planning and narcotics consumption,” Onyango said. “The male suspects often smoke marijuana and later plan attacks, primarily targeting pedestrians around the Clock Tower and other busy areas.”
The police revealed that the suspects were part of a larger network of criminals operating in the downtown area, who prey on individuals, especially during evening rush hours. The gangs are believed to move in groups or individually, attacking unsuspecting pedestrians. This area has long been under surveillance due to its reputation as a hotspot for criminal activities, including drug abuse and violent offenses.
The police operation, which was conducted with precision and efficiency, has been hailed as a significant step in disrupting criminal networks in the Kampala Central Division. Onyango emphasized that the police will continue to target other crime-prone areas within the city, ensuring that residents and visitors can feel safe in public spaces. “We are committed to maintaining law and order in the city and will continue to take proactive steps to combat crime,” he stated.
The suspects detained in connection with the operation were expected to appear in court on Wednesday, November 6, after undergoing screening procedures. This move is part of a broader strategy by the police to dismantle criminal syndicates in Kampala and ensure public safety.
