Volkswagen is recalling over 114,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to concerns over the driver-side airbag, which may pose a safety risk, with affected owners set to receive free repairs.

(US) – Volkswagen has announced the recall of 114,478 vehicles in the United States due to concerns over a potential issue with the driver-side airbag. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall affects certain Beetle and Passat models from the 2006 to 2019 production years.

The issue arises from a potential defect in the driver’s side frontal airbag inflator. The NHTSA explained that the inflator could explode due to the degradation of its propellant, which occurs after prolonged exposure to high humidity, high temperatures, and temperature cycling. This defect could lead to serious safety risks for drivers in the event of an accident.

In response to the issue, Volkswagen will replace the driver’s side front airbag module in affected vehicles at no cost to the owners. The company has advised owners of the affected vehicles to contact their dealers for further information on the recall and how to proceed with repairs.

Volkswagen has yet to respond to requests for further comment on the recall.
