Police in Masaka arrested two lab assistants and a security guard for allegedly possessing human organs meant for transport to Kampala, sparking an ongoing investigation into their origins.

(Masaka) – Authorities in Masaka City are holding two laboratory assistants and a private security guard who were allegedly found in possession of human organs. The suspects, who are employed at the Masaka branch of Lancet Laboratories, are under investigation for reportedly planning to transport the organs to Kampala.

According to Greater Masaka regional police spokesperson Twaha Kasirye, the incident occurred on Friday evening when the security guard, along with an accomplice who remains at large, was transporting the organs on a motorcycle. Around 8:30 pm, as they approached Kijjabwemi trading center on Masaka-Kyabakuza Road, the motorcycle hit a speed bump, causing a box containing the organs to fall onto the road.

Mr. Kasirye described how the organs, reportedly packed in a small bucket and wrapped in a box, spilled out when an oncoming vehicle struck the box after it fell on the tarmac. The unexpected sight of the organs alarmed nearby residents, who quickly notified local authorities. Police arrived promptly at the scene, taking the two lab assistants and the security guard into custody to assist with the investigation.

Further inquiries have revealed that the organs may have originated from Villa-Maria Hospital and Kitovu Hospital, though officials are working to confirm their source and verify if the donors are alive. “We are still engaging the management of both hospitals to know exactly what these organs are,” Mr. Kasirye stated, noting that the investigation is ongoing.

A senior staff member at Lancet Laboratories in Masaka, who requested anonymity due to lack of authorization to speak to the media, expressed regret over the incident. The staff member stated that the organs were meant to be transported to Lancet’s Kampala laboratory for further examination but declined to provide additional details.
