The National Unity Platform (NUP) is facing an internal storm of unprecedented proportions. Rumors have spread like wildfire that David Lewis Rubongoya, the party’s Secretary General, is involved in a secret plot to create a new political party.

This new party, linked to Spartan Mukagyi, a close ally and former NUP official, has set the Diaspora leadership on edge, demanding urgent answers.

Since the news broke, NUP’s party leadership has remained eerily silent, with party leader Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) keeping his lips sealed. His advisors have reportedly warned him not to make any public statements, fearing that doing so would only fuel the fire, giving unnecessary attention to the new party.

This caution comes in the wake of the infamous Mathius Mpuga scandal involving UGX 500 million, which remains a festering wound for the party.

Sources close to the party have revealed growing tension within NUP, with the Diaspora chapters now urging Rubongoya to step down.

They suggest that Chairman Nyanzi Ssentamu, a key figure in the party’s Kunga Campaign, should take over as Secretary General. Nyanzi, who is also the brother of Bobi Wine, is seen by the Diaspora community as a loyal figure who would place the party’s interests above personal gain.

However, the crisis deepens as the Diaspora chapters declare that they will no longer fund NUP until clarity is provided. They claim they cannot continue supporting a party whose leadership seems more focused on splitting than uniting. In fact, they argue that any funds raised will only go to a new party, one whose goals and plans remain shrouded in mystery.

The new party, tentatively named the People Power Front (PPF), was registered in December 2023. The Electoral Commission confirmed its existence, sparking further outrage when it became known that Spartan Mukagyi, a former NUP official and Rubongoya’s close associate, was behind its creation. Adding fuel to the fire, rumors have surfaced that PPF is planning a mass defection from NUP on November 23, 2024, when a People Power reunion will reportedly take place, shifting leadership from NUP to PPF.

As the clock ticks down, the pressure on NUP is rising. The Diaspora community has given the party an ultimatum, either explain what is happening and address the growing concerns, or risk losing the critical support they provide. Without answers, the new party’s shadow will continue to hang over NUP like a dark cloud, threatening to tear it apart from within.
