President William Ruto Pays Tribute to Late Kenyan Volleyball Star Janet Wanja

Kenyan President H.E. William Ruto has honored the late volleyball star Janet Wanja on his X page. Ruto characterized Wanja as a talented and disciplined individual who contributed to the nation’s sports with great honor and commitment.

He further noted that she was dedicated, hard-working, and a team-oriented player. The President also expressed that the family and friends of the deceased should draw comfort from the nationwide mourning and prayers being offered for them. He added that there is hope that one day humanity will overcome cancer.




“Janet Wanja, a gifted and disciplined volleyball star, served the cause of our country’s sports with honour and dedication.




She was focused, hardworking and a team player.




May it be comfort to her family, friends and the wider sports fraternity that we are praying for them at this tough and difficult time.

One day, we will beat cancer. Rest in Peace, Wanja,”Ruto’s statement read.

A statement from Wanja’s family confirmed that the decorated volleyball player passed away at 10 PM on Thursday, the 26th. This information was shared in a statement by her brother, Kevin Kimani.




Wanja, who played as a setter, has had her remains transferred to the Montezuma Monalisa Funeral Home located on Mbagathi Way in Nairobi.

The esteemed volleyball player, who represented clubs like Kenyan Pipeline, had been fighting gallbladder cancer. Prior to her diagnosis, she served as the trainer for Kenya’s national volleyball team, the Malkia Strikers, at the Paris Olympic Games. The Kenyan Volleyball Association has already expressed their condolences for their lost champion.

Additionally, Wanja held the position of the national team’s coach and was with them during the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. She also accompanied them to the World Challenger Cup in the Philippines.
