The Presidential Advisory Committee on Exports and Industrial Development (PACEID) has reiterated its commitment to supporting young people through talent development, with sports identified as one of the key areas where youth can be empowered.

The commitment comes after the successful conclusion of the Ankole Cup, a regional football tournament that brought together teams from across the Ankole sub-region, with Ibanda District eventually emerging champions.

Speaking during a media engagement, PACEID highlighted the Ankole Cup as an example of what can be achieved when young people are given platforms and the support needed to showcase their abilities.

PACEID Chairman Odrek Rwabwogo has been among those backing the tournament, with his support extending to the Ibanda District team from the early stages of the competition.

Rwabwogo contributed Shs14 million towards Ibanda’s participation in the tournament, support that helped the team through its campaign before eventually lifting the trophy.

The contribution has been welcomed by the team and local leaders, who say sustained support is important if young athletes are to develop their talent and compete at higher levels.

For PACEID, the focus goes beyond football. The committee says there is a need for government, the private sector and other stakeholders to create more opportunities for young Ugandans to turn their talents into meaningful opportunities.

The media engagement was therefore also intended to give journalists a deeper understanding of PACEID’s work in youth empowerment, talent development and the wider efforts to create opportunities for young people.

Ibanda’s victory has now renewed calls for more investment in sports across the Ankole region, with stakeholders hoping the success of the Ankole Cup can inspire continued support for young athletes and other emerging talents.

The bigger question now is whether the support witnessed during the Ankole Cup can be sustained beyond the tournament, giving young people a pathway to develop their talents long after the final whistle.
