Cholera Outbreak in Northern Uganda: 67 Cases Reported, One Death

The Ankole Times

The number of suspected cholera cases in Uganda has risen to 67 since the outbreak was first reported in the northern part of the country on January 7th, the Ministry of Health announced on Friday.

Daniel Kyabayinze, director of public health at the Ministry of Health, informed reporters that out of the 67 cases, seven have been laboratory-confirmed, while the remaining cases are still under investigation.

All reported cases have originated from the northern border district of Lamwo. Currently, 21 individuals remain hospitalized, while the others have been treated and discharged. Sadly, one death has been attributed to the outbreak.

Kyabayinze stated that the outbreak is suspected to have been imported from neighboring countries.

“The disease has spread due to poor hygiene practices and the consumption of contaminated water, particularly in areas with inadequate access to latrines and toilets,” Kyabayinze explained.

“We have unfortunately lost one life to cholera. Treatment primarily focuses on rehydration. We urge the public to prioritize proper hygiene, boil their drinking water, and promptly seek medical attention at designated treatment centers if they suspect they may have contracted the disease,” he added.

Cholera is a severe diarrheal illness caused by infection with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. It can rapidly lead to severe dehydration and death if left untreated.
