Alebtong district in northern Uganda has launched road works costing sh1 billion to enhance transportation and connectivity. The project includes the maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation of major impassable roads. Government Chief Whip and the area MP for Ajuri county, Denis Hamson Obua, inaugurated the projects on Friday.
The targeted roads are in four subcounties: Adwir, Awei, Aloi, and Abia. According to Tom Richard Opio, the Alebtong district superintendent of works responsible for roads and construction, the scope of the works involves bush clearance, full grading, and spot graveling. The launch of the project took place in Adwir sub-county.
Denis Hamson Obua commended the Government for this initiative, expressing his satisfaction with the efforts to improve roads in districts, cities, and municipalities throughout the country. He also mentioned that in the current financial year (2023/2024), each district, city, and municipality will receive an additional sh1 billion for road repairs and rehabilitation to enhance connectivity and facilitate the transportation of produce to the market.
Obua revealed that Alebtong has already received sh250 million in the first quarter, and this funding will continue until it reaches sh1 billion at the end of the financial year. He encouraged community members to oversee the proper execution of the road works to ensure value for money.
David Kennedy Odongo, the district chairperson, identified several impassable roads in the district that will be fully repaired under this new arrangement. He also mentioned that the Ministry of Works and Transport has pledged to address the Ayumu Bridge, which connects Alebtong to the Teso sub-region.
Dorcas Acen, the district woman MP and chairperson of the district road committee, stated that they have identified 17 roads and one bridge for improvement in this financial year.
The district’s chief administrative officer, Robert Abinaitwe, expressed satisfaction with the allocation of funds for road work, emphasizing the poor condition of the district’s roads.
