Obongi, Uganda – Pupil turnout in Obongi district on the first day of the school term was very low, at around 7%, while teacher attendance was approximately 70%.
Ms. Bako Joyce Primo, head teacher of Liwa Primary School, attributed the low pupil turnout to parents’ negative attitudes toward education. She emphasized the need for parents to develop a more positive mindset regarding their children’s education.
Obongi RDC Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka and DRDC Frank Kyaze have begun monitoring primary and secondary schools throughout the district. Hashaka told this publication that several schools had as few as seven pupils present on the first day.
It is common practice for many parents to keep their children home for about a week after schools reopen.
The RDC expressed appreciation for the high teacher turnout on the second day of school. He encouraged them to begin teaching immediately, without waiting for absent pupils, to ensure they stay on track with the syllabus and new curriculum.
This includes preparing lesson plans and schemes of work, along with close supervision from head teachers and directors of studies.
