Obongi District, Uganda – Security officials in Obongi district have arrested twelve Yumbe district officials for raiding and stealing goats from Obongi district.
The arrest occurred after a two-day raid and theft of goats from Kali village in Kali Parish, Itula sub-county, Obongi district.
The suspected thieves, identified by tags marked “Romogi sub-county Yumbe district,” were apprehended by UPDF soldiers and police from Obongi district.
The suspects, who used violence against the community in Kali while stealing the goats, are currently being held by police in Obongi as investigations continue.
The LC3 Chairperson of Itula sub-county, Siraje Karala, condemned the actions of the Yumbe district officials, who are causing insecurity in Itula sub-county. Mr. Karala, who also serves as the sub-county security chairperson, warned the Yumbe district officials against repeatedly attacking Itula sub-county and vowed to take action against them.
The RDC of Obongi, Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, stated that action would be taken against all those causing insecurity from Yumbe. Last year, Yumbe district officials held an enumeration officer and LC1 chairperson of Kochi Boma village in Itula sub-county at gunpoint.
They then kidnapped the victims and took them to Romogi sub-county in Yumbe district. At that time, the sub-county Chief of Romogi sub-county, one Kabaka, who was armed with a pistol, threatened to shoot the Obongi district officials and stepped on the head of the enumeration officer, who was conducting a census.
The police in Yumbe started investigating the matter but eventually frustrated the investigation. Last year, a team of thugs led by a district councilor from Yumbe district dismantled a signpost belonging to Obongi district local government and stole it. The thugs recorded the incident on video and posted it on social media. A police case was opened, but to date, no action has been taken.
In 2024, a team of leaders and police from Yumbe attacked Obongi district and destroyed people’s crops. The Woman Member of Parliament for Obongi, Hon. Zumura Maneno, and the RDC, Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, rushed to the scene of the crime in Kali and stopped the destruction of crops.
The MP and RDC also intervened to prevent the eviction of locals by the Yumbe district officials.
RDC Obongi Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka has directed an emergency security meeting to address the matter.
