A tragic incident occurred on Saturday around 16:00 hours in Nimu Village, Pawo West Parish, Lukung Sub-County, Lamwo District, when a civilian was killed by an unexploded ordnance (UXO) suspected to have been left behind during the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) insurgency.
According to Capt. Edrin Mawanda, the UPDF 5th Division Public Information Officer, the deceased has been identified as Ayao Esther, a 47-year-old woman who was attending to her garden when the ordnance detonated, resulting in her immediate death.
Capt. Mawanda stated that her body has been taken to Lamwo Health Centre for a postmortem examination.
However, the 5th Division Commander, Major General Keith Katungi, has condoled with the family of the deceased and urged residents to exercise caution and report any suspicious objects resembling ordnance to security forces, emphasizing the importance of vigilance to prevent further tragedies.
The Uganda People’s Defence Forces reaffirm their commitment to protecting the people of Uganda and their property.
The LRA insurgency has left behind many unexploded ordnances in Northern Uganda, and it is therefore crucial to remain cautious of any unfamiliar objects.
