Police in Kanungu District have arrested two suspects for allegedly stealing three basins of coffee from Tugume Laban, a resident of Kihihi Town Council.
The suspects, identified as Praise Agnes and Twongyirwe Justus, both residents of Kihembe Cell in Kihihi Town Council, are currently detained at Kihihi Police Station.
According to Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, the theft occurred on Sunday night when unknown individuals stole Tugume’s coffee from his compound.
The stolen coffee, which had been left on the tapline, amounted to approximately three basins. Upon discovering the theft, Tugume reported the incident to Kihihi Police Station, prompting an investigation that included the use of canine services.
A police team, accompanied by a sniffer dog, visited and documented the crime scene. The dog followed a scent trail for about 300 meters, eventually leading officers to the home of Praise Agnes. Upon arrival, the dog stopped at her doorstep, where the house was found locked.
The area chairperson was called to intervene, and when Praise Agnes opened the door, the stolen coffee was recovered inside her house.
During questioning, Praise Agnes implicated Twongyirwe Justus, alleging that he had stolen the coffee during the night with the intention of selling it. Both suspects were arrested along with the recovered coffee and taken into custody for further investigation.
Maate confirmed the arrests and stated that once inquiries are complete, the suspects will be presented in court to face charges.
