In Kampala, oel Ssenyonyi, the spokesperson for the National Unity Platform-NUP party, along with Lewis Rubongoya, the party’s secretary general, and Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu, a former NUP parliamentary candidate from Kampala central, were arrested by the police.
Earlier in the day, a group of security forces, including the military and police, surrounded the three individuals at a fuel station called Rubbies Pump in Kamwokya. This happened shortly after they had spoken to journalists about their plans to celebrate Uganda’s independence at their party headquarters.
The security forces then put them in a minibus, which they referred to as a “drone,” and took them to Kiira Road police station. Additionally, they picked up several other people wearing NUP t-shirts and drove them away in pickup trucks to an unknown location.
The arrested leaders had just informed the press that they intended to gather at the NUP offices to celebrate independence and offer prayers for their colleagues who had lost their lives in their political struggle.
More details on this story will be provided as they become available.
