Kikuube NRM Supporters Accuse Two MPs of Secretly Campaigning for NUP Candidate Ahead of LCV Polls

KIKUBE, Uganda – Tension is rising within the National Resistance Movement (NRM) ranks in Kikuube District as some party supporters accuse two legislators of secretly campaigning for a National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate in the race for District Chairperson (LCV).

The supporters allege that the two Members of Parliament, Asinansi Nyakato, the Woman MP for Hoima City, and Ismail Kasirye Ogama, MP for Hoima West Division, are undermining the NRM’s efforts by supporting a rival candidate despite publicly expressing loyalty to the ruling party.

Led by Geoffrey Azimwe, the aggrieved supporters claim the MPs have failed to fully support the NRM flag bearer and are instead facilitating the campaign of a candidate affiliated with NUP.

“We expected these leaders to campaign for the NRM candidate because they belong to our party. However, during the day they appear to support the NRM, but at night they allegedly provide financial support to the NUP candidate,” Azimwe said.

He urged the NRM leadership to intervene before the elections, warning that the party risks losing the seat if the alleged actions continue.

“We want the top NRM organs to investigate this matter and, if necessary, stop these MPs from interfering in the Kikuube campaigns. Otherwise, our candidate may not win,” he added.

Another supporter, Elizabeth Ahibisimwe, echoed the concerns, claiming that the two legislators, whom she described as close allies of former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among, have established a strong presence in the district and are creating divisions within the party.

“Their activities are confusing supporters and weakening our campaign structures at a critical time,” Ahibisimwe said.

Efforts to obtain comments from the two MPs were unsuccessful, as repeated phone calls from this publication went unanswered.

The Kikuube District LCV election is scheduled to take place on 18th June just two days away, with campaigns entering their final stages amid growing political tension and accusations of internal sabotage within the NRM.

The allegations could further complicate the contest as voters prepare to elect the district’s next political leader.
