Kampala, April 14, 2025 — After months of critical rehabilitation works, the iconic Karuma Bridge along the Kampala–Gulu Highway is ready to reopen for all forms of motorized traffic starting Monday morning, April 14th, 2025. The Ministry of Works and Transport has confirmed the completion of the upgrade, marking a significant milestone in ensuring safer and more efficient transport in northern Uganda and beyond.
Originally constructed in the 1960s, the Karuma Bridge is a key link between central and northern Uganda. However, years of wear and tear, combined with increased traffic volume, had taken a toll on its structural integrity. In October 2024, authorities made the decision to temporarily close the bridge to undertake comprehensive rehabilitation works aimed at restoring its strength and safety.
At a cost of UGX 65 billion, funded by the Government of Uganda, the rehabilitation included structural strengthening, resurfacing, expansion joint replacements, and modern safety enhancements. The project was executed in phases to minimize disruption, with detours and alternative crossings provided for essential travel.
“We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we undertook this very essential rehabilitation exercise of the bridge,” said an official from the Ministry. “Karuma Bridge like never before—it’s ready to serve all nature of motorized traffic.”
The public has reacted positively to the news of the reopening. Local business owners, transporters, and commuters expressed relief and excitement, noting the bridge’s reopening will ease travel times and reduce transportation costs.
The Karuma Bridge stands not just as a piece of infrastructure, but as a symbol of national connectivity and resilience. With this upgrade, the government reaffirms its commitment to maintaining a modern, safe, and inclusive transport system for all Ugandans.
Travelers are advised to resume normal travel plans via the Karuma route beginning today 14th April 2025.
