Retired Assistant Commissioner of Police Sam Omala has passed away. He died this morning at 7:00 AM at Mulago National Referral Hospital after a prolonged battle with prostate cancer and kidney failure, according to Captain Mike Mukula.
Omala, who also served as Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander during his time in the force, was widely known for his tough stance during the 2011 “Walk to Work” protests, where he famously clashed with opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye.
In his later years, however, Omala expressed regret over some of his actions during his active service and publicly apologized to those he may have wronged.
At the time of his retirement, Omala held the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police. He later joined Arrow Security Systems Ltd., a private security firm owned by Captain Mike Mukula, where he served as Director of Operations and Deputy CEO.
Initial reports of his death circulated widely on social media yesterday but were refuted by both his family and the Uganda Police Force, who confirmed he was still alive but on oxygen support at the time.
