Food Poisoning Suspected as Kanungu Elder Dies After Party

Police in Kanungu District have launched an investigation into the sudden death of 87-year-old John Byomuhangi, a resident of Kiruruma Cell, Rushaka Parish, Nyamirama Sub-county.

The incident reportedly occurred on April 26, 2025, at approximately 2:00 PM in Kiruruma Cell. According to police reports, Byomuhangi had attended a party hosted by his neighbor, Kyampire Mebro. Food was served at the gathering, and Byomuhangi was among the guests who ate from the same dish. Shortly after the meal, he began complaining of severe stomach pains.

As Byomuhangi’s condition deteriorated, he was quickly taken to a nearby hospital but unfortunately passed away while being transported.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, confirmed the incident and stated that a postmortem examination has been conducted at Kihihi Health Centre IV to determine the cause of death.

He further added that food and biological samples have been collected from the scene and submitted to the Government Analytical Laboratory (GAL) for thorough forensic analysis.

Maate has appealed to the relatives of the deceased and community members to remain calm and cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation. He also assured the public that updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
