President Museveni Warns Leaders About Cattle Rustling Involvement
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni issued a warning to local leaders allegedly involved in cattle rustling during the country’s 61st Independence Day celebrations in Kitgum Municipality. The President expressed his concern about the reported involvement of leaders from the Acholi and Karamoja sub-regions in cattle rustling activities, which have been a persistent issue in parts of northern Uganda.
The President cited security reports from the army’s 5th and 3rd Divisions, based in Acholi and Karamoja, respectively, detailing the involvement of some local leaders in cattle theft. He expressed his disappointment with the fact that certain leaders had only received warnings and were released. He did not name the specific individuals involved.
In addition to this, President Museveni revealed that a councillor in one of the sub-counties of Agago district had provided intelligence to soldiers of Karimojong origin regarding the whereabouts of stolen cows.
During the event, Brigadier Keith Katungi, the UPDF 5th Division commander, mentioned that one councillor had been imprisoned for his involvement in cattle rustling activities. He emphasized the compromising of local security due to collusion between community members and cattle raiders.
The President also raised concerns about the involvement of some security personnel and businessmen in transporting stolen cattle to Kampala, the capital city of Uganda.
The Independence Day celebrations carried the theme of “Sustaining a united and progressive nation: Taking charge of our future as a free nation.” President Museveni took the opportunity to criticize African leaders for their lukewarm approach to regional trade, emphasizing the importance of integration for wealth creation and development.
On a positive note, the President highlighted the success of Uganda’s regional knowledge and skilling centers in producing talented scientists. He also commissioned a locally made farm truck known as “Bingwa,” which can transport goods, generate electricity, and pump water. The vehicle was developed by a group of Ugandan innovators based in Kibuye, Kampala.
President Museveni concluded the event by inaugurating the new Kitgum Central Market, funded by the African Development Bank. Additionally, several individuals received medals and awards for their contributions in various disciplines during the celebration.
