Police in Kabale District are investigating a tragic incident in which a 23-year-old man, Mutabazi Peter, was killed by a mob over allegations of repeatedly mistreating his biological father, Turyamureba John.
Mutabazi, a resident of Nyarungwe Village, Katokye Parish in Kyanamira Sub-county, was reportedly lynched on the night of July 8, 2025. The incident occurred at around 2:00 a.m. on July 9 at Rubira Trading Centre, also in Katokye Parish.
According to preliminary police reports, a concerned resident alerted authorities that Mutabazi had been beaten to death by unidentified individuals.
Investigations indicate that he had previously been accused of assaulting his father and stealing from him. On the night in question, local residents allegedly apprehended him and took the law into their own hands.
A case of murder was initially registered at Kyanamira Police Post and later transferred to Kabale Central Police Station. Detectives visited and documented the crime scene, recorded witness statements, and conducted a postmortem examination as part of ongoing investigations.
Police have strongly condemned the act of mob justice and are urging the public to report criminal behavior through lawful channels.
“Taking the law into your own hands is a criminal offense and undermines the justice system,” police said in a statement.
Efforts are underway to identify and apprehend those involved in the mob action so they can be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
