KISORO DISTRICT, Uganda – Just two days before the National Resistance Movement (NRM) primary elections on Thursday, July 17, 2025, fresh chaos has erupted in Bukimbiri County. Growing allegations of fraud concerning the party’s voters’ register are threatening the integrity of the upcoming polls.
The controversy was brought to light on Monday during a press conference held at the Kisoro District Headquarters by Hon. Eddie Kwizera Wagahungu, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Bukimbiri County.
His remarks followed the circulation of what he termed a “fake and inflated voters’ register” originating from the Kisoro District NRM office.
According to the register released by the district NRM office, Bukimbiri County boasts a total of 42,993 registered party voters. However, a stark discrepancy emerges when compared to the official general voters’ register from the Electoral Commission, which lists only 33,010 voters in the same constituency. This significant difference of approximately 10,000 voters has fueled the allegations.
Hon. Kwizera vehemently criticized the inflated figures, branding the NRM party register a “counterfeit tool intended to rig the primaries through bribery and manipulation.”
He also vowed to escalate the matter directly to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, accusing district NRM Registrar Mujambere Tadeo of facilitating the distribution of these allegedly fake registers in Kisoro and other constituencies.
In response to the accusations, Kisoro District NRM Registrar Mujambere Tadeo defended the authenticity of the party register. He clarified that the party’s register reflects the number of registered NRM members, emphasizing that it should not be confused with the Electoral Commission’s general voters’ register.
Tadeo also confirmed that a crucial meeting with all sub-county NRM registrars would be held today, Tuesday, at the Kisoro District Council Hall to ensure transparent and and fair primary elections.
