Rukungiri District Police have initiated a serious manhunt for unknown suspects who allegedly broke into Rwakaraba Police Post in Nyakishenyi Sub-county and stole an SMG rifle with 30 rounds of ammunition.

The incident occurred on the evening of Saturday, July 26, 2025, at approximately 8:30 PM. Preliminary investigations reveal that the stolen firearm belonged to Police Constable (PC) Muyambi Pius (Force No. 83982), who had reported for duty at 6:00 AM.

According to police reports, PC Muyambi secured the rifle in his bedroom, which is adjacent to the station counter. At around 8:00 PM, he left the post to have supper at a nearby hotel, located about 60 meters away.

Upon his return, he discovered that his room had been broken into and the firearm was missing. He immediately alerted nearby residents who confirmed the break-in.

The Officer in Charge (OC) of the post, who had earlier checked out for medical reasons, was also notified. A team from Rukungiri Police Station, including a K-9 unit, responded to the scene to commence investigations, but so far, no positive leads have been obtained.

PC Muyambi Pius has been taken into custody to assist with the ongoing investigation.

Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed the incident and urged the public to remain vigilant. “We call upon members of the public to be security conscious.

Should anyone see any suspicious objects or persons, they are advised to immediately report to local leaders or relevant authorities so that the suspects can be apprehended and brought to justice,” said ASP Maate.
