KANUNGU, UGANDA – Police in Kanungu District have arrested four suspects for questioning following the death of 40-year-old Onesmus Musinguzi, a teacher and resident of Rwabushunju cell in Northern Ward, Kanungu Town Council.

Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson Elly Maate confirmed the arrests, identifying the suspects as Nagasha Salim, Munyambabazi Isaac, Nuwagaba Henry, and Musinguzi Ashraf, all residents of the same village as the deceased.

Maate explained that on July 17, 2025, Musinguzi was ambushed by the four individuals while returning home from Mazollidi Trading Centre.

The incident occurred at the “Keep Left” junction near Mazollidi Primary School. Musinguzi, recognizing his attackers as villagers, was reportedly hit with an unknown object, causing him to fall.

One of the suspects then allegedly took Musinguzi’s phone from his pocket and called his aunt, Dianah, who promptly responded to the scene and rushed the victim to Katate Health Center IV.

Due to the severity of his injuries, Musinguzi was referred from Katate Health Center IV to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, and subsequently to Mulago National Referral Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries yesterday.

Maate stated that a postmortem examination conducted at Mulago City Mortuary revealed that Musinguzi’s spinal cord was broken. Upon receiving news of his death, police immediately acted, leading to the arrest of the four suspects, who are now awaiting prosecution.

The police spokesperson urged the public to refrain from acts of lawlessness and instead utilize legal channels for resolving disputes, rather than resorting to vigilantism.
