Unidentified Female Cyclist Dies in Collision with Fuel Tanker in Lira City

LIRA CITY WEST – A speeding fuel tanker collided with and killed a female cyclist along Juba Road on the morning of August 11, 2025, in a tragic incident that police have attributed to reckless driving.

According to a statement from North Kyoga Region Police Spokesperson Patrick Jimmy Okema, the incident occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. near Good Lord Hardware.




Both the victim, who has not yet been identified, and the driver of the tanker were traveling from Kamdini towards Lira City.




Initial police findings indicate that the driver of the white Mercedes Benz fuel tanker, with registration number KBS 761N/ZD 8362, attempted to overtake the cyclist but “miscalculated,” leading to a fatal impact that crushed the cyclist’s head.




Following the accident, the unidentified driver reported himself and his vehicle to the Lira Central Division station. Traffic officers from Lira-City West Division were dispatched to the scene to document the incident.

The deceased’s body was taken to Lira Regional Referral Hospital’s mortuary for a post-mortem examination. The tanker remains at the Lira Central Division station pending a thorough inspection of the vehicle.

The police spokesperson confirmed that preliminary investigations point to reckless driving as the cause of the fatal accident.
