MUBENDE, Uganda – Police in Mubende District have arrested a man for impersonating a doctor at Mubende Regional Referral Hospital. The suspect, identified as Frank Kyalimpa, allegedly extorted money from patients by posing as a hospital staff member.
According to Senior Hospital Administrator Onesimus Kibaya, the hospital began an internal investigation after receiving numerous complaints from patients and caregivers. CCTV footage showed Kyalimpa entering wards at night, after official rounds, wearing a clinical coat and administering medication.
After reviewing the footage, hospital staff located and arrested Kyalimpa on the premises, still wearing the coat. He was allegedly found altering patient prescriptions, discharging patients without authorization, and directing them to purchase drugs directly from him. A search of his coat revealed folded cash in various pockets and several types of medicine.
Kibaya stated that Kyalimpa tried to bribe him to drop the matter. The suspect’s bank records showed transactions totaling over Shs4 million. Kyalimpa had also presented a Kampala International University (KIU) ID card, claiming to be an intern doctor, but the university confirmed he was not a registered student.
Kibaya condemned the actions, stating they had damaged the hospital’s reputation and eroded public trust in legitimate medical professionals. One patient, Micheal Ssenyonjo, accused Kyalimpa of taking Shs150,000 from him for medicine for his wife, which was never delivered.
Kyalimpa is currently being held at Mubende Central Police Station as investigations continue. Police have not yet released an official statement on the matter.
