KAMPALA — President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni was on Tuesday nominated as the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer for the 2026 general elections, officially confirming his bid to extend his leadership into another term.
The nomination event reaffirmed Museveni’s central role in Uganda’s political landscape, where he has been at the helm since 1986. Surrounded by senior NRM officials, ministers, and his wife, First Lady Janet Museveni, the President used the occasion to highlight his vision for Uganda’s next chapter.
**Achievements and Progress**
Museveni pointed to the country’s economic growth as evidence of what his government has delivered. Uganda’s GDP, he said, has doubled in the past term — rising from \$34 billion to \$66 billion — thanks to investments in infrastructure, electricity, telecommunications, and education.
*”To double the size of GDP in one term is not a mean achievement,”* he remarked.
He noted that Uganda’s stability has made it a preferred destination for global investors seeking peace and profitability.
**Next Term Priorities**
Looking ahead, Museveni outlined two key priorities: advancing Uganda to high–middle-income status and addressing the everyday needs of citizens.
His agenda includes:
* Expanding opportunities for Ugandans to join the money economy
* Strengthening public services such as free education, healthcare, and road maintenance
* Ensuring essential drugs in health centers
* Providing safe water to all villages
*”Everybody must be involved in the money economy,”* Museveni stressed, pledging that his government will focus on grassroots inclusion alongside macroeconomic growth.
**Continuity and Stability**
For the NRM, Museveni’s nomination signals continuity of leadership and stability at a time when the country is positioning itself for stronger integration into the global economy. Party leaders emphasized that the 2026 elections will give Ugandans a chance to consolidate gains made over the past decades.
The President is expected to officially launch his campaign at Kololo Grounds later today, where he will rally supporters around his theme of stability, inclusive growth, and socio-economic transformation.
