Over 160,000 Candidates Begin Final A’Level Examinations Across Uganda

The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has today, November 10, 2025, flagged off the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) examinations, with a total of 166,402 Senior Six candidates sitting their final papers across the country. According to UNEB, the candidates are writing their exams from 2,844 examination centres nationwide.

On the first day, candidates are expected to write six papers — three in the morning and three in the afternoon. The morning session includes Theory of Government and Constitutional Development Paper 5, History of Africa Paper 6, and Physics Paper 1. In the afternoon, they will sit Literature in English Paper 1, Fasihi ya Kiswahili Paper 1, and Physics Paper 2.

Of the total number of candidates, 42,328 are sponsored by the Government under the Universal Post-Level Education and Training (UPLET) programme, while 124,074 are privately sponsored. In terms of gender, 93,630 are male and 77,772 are female.

UNEB Executive Director Dan Odongo cautioned candidates, teachers, and invigilators against engaging in examination malpractice, emphasizing that offenders will face severe penalties. “The Board continues to warn all persons contemplating involvement in any form of examination malpractice. They will be dealt with in accordance with the UNEB Act,” Odongo said. He noted that the penalties under the Act include five to ten years in jail, fines ranging from UGX 20 million to UGX 40 million, or both.

Odongo also revealed that the number of female candidates completing the A’Level cycle has been increasing steadily. In 2022, the number stood at 40,713, rising by 15.1% to 46,860 in 2023. He added that the examinations are intended to assess the level of academic achievement and help guide learners along their career paths.

“The examination is not an end in itself; rather, it assists in positioning candidates along their career trajectories. Candidates should therefore approach it calmly,” he advised.
