In a troubling incident, a 43-year-old man in Kasese District is under arrest for allegedly murdering his wife and brother. The suspect, Jackson Muhindo Kasulenge, is accused of secretly burying their bodies in his banana plantation.
The victims, Marry Biira, aged 40, and Kabutusi Kasulenge Joiles, aged 45, were reported missing by their family, leading to the discovery of the gruesome crime. Preliminary investigations suggest that Muhindo committed the murders in May and July of this year at Kamughobe village, Kisinga Sub County in Kasese District.
Rwenzori East Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Nelson Tumushime, confirmed Muhindo’s arrest and informed the public that he is currently being held at Kasese Central Police Station, while investigations are ongoing.
The tragic events came to light when Biira’s family noticed her absence in late September, during a family member’s funeral. Muhindo, who attended the funeral alone, claimed that his wife had divorced him in May and he expected to find her at the event. This raised suspicions within Biira’s family, leading them to report her disappearance to Munkunyu Police Post.
Muhindo was subsequently detained and questioned but did not disclose the whereabouts of his wife. On Tuesday, during a search of his banana plantation, residents discovered two graves. The first grave contained a fabric (kitenge) and some decomposing body parts wrapped in the cloth. A small hole on top of the grave prompted further investigation.
In addition, another grave was found on the same piece of land, raising suspicions that it might contain the body of Kabutusi, who had gone missing shortly after Biira’s disappearance. Muhindo had previously reported that his elder brother was arrested in July on drug-related charges, but no record of his arrest was found in local police stations.
As the investigation continues, Ms. Agnes Biira Kasulenge, the biological sister of the victims, disclosed that in July, Kabutusi had informed her of his intention to demand Shs400,000 from Muhindo but never returned home.
Kisinga Sub County chairperson, Mr. Julius Mukeri, has called on the residents to remain patient while waiting for a court order to exhume the bodies and carry out postmortem and DNA tests to confirm the identities of the deceased individuals, namely Biira and Kabutusi.
