BUSHENYI, Uganda — Residents from several villages in Bushenyi District on March 15, 2026, took it upon themselves to repair and clear the pathway at Ihama Bridge, a key crossing point that connects communities between Ishaka–Bushenyi Municipality and Bumbaire Sub-county.

The residents, drawn from Kyabumbaire, Kitakuka Rwakati, Masya, and Kyitembe villages, said they were forced to act after repeated appeals to local leaders went unanswered.

According to community members, the poor condition of the bridge had made movement difficult for residents, traders, and motorists who depend on the crossing for daily activities.

Frustrated by what they described as a lack of response from local authorities, including leaders at Local Council One (LC1) and Local Council Three (LC3) levels, residents mobilized themselves and carried out the clearing and repairs.

Community members said Ihama Bridge is a critical link for people traveling between the municipality and surrounding rural areas, and its deteriorating state had caused significant inconvenience to the population.

The residents’ initiative underscores growing concerns about infrastructure challenges in the area and the need for faster response from local authorities when communities raise issues affecting public access and mobility.

Local leaders had not yet issued a formal response regarding the community’s action by press time.
