KITGUM, Uganda — A 44-year-old man in Kitgum District has died following a violent altercation reportedly sparked by a dispute over a roasted rat.
According to an incident report filed at Uganda Police Force under CRB 281/2026, the incident happened in the early hours of 8th May 2026, in Tultul Central Village, Katwotwo Parish, Orom East Sub-county.
The deceased was identified as Omony Charles, a 44-year-old peasant and resident of the area.
Police reports indicate that Omony and another man, identified as Okot David, were reportedly roasting and sharing rats together when a disagreement broke out. The suspect allegedly accused Omony of eating his rat, leading to a physical fight.
During the confrontation, Omony reportedly became unconscious after the assault. Residents rushed him to Orom Health Centre III for medical attention, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The matter was later reported to Orom Police Station by Lotyang James, a 33-year-old resident of Tultul Central Village.
Police officers and scene-of-crime personnel visited the scene and documented evidence as investigations commenced. The body of the deceased was transferred to Namukora Health Centre mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Authorities confirmed that one suspect has since been arrested to assist with ongoing investigations.
The shocking incident has left residents of the community in disbelief, with many expressing concern over how a minor disagreement escalated into a deadly confrontation.
Police say inquiries into the murder are still ongoing.
