Kazo District, Uganda — Police in Kazo District have this evening arrested two business people and impounded over 230 kilograms of beef suspected to be unsafe for human consumption.
The meat, which was being transported on a lorry, was intercepted at Humura Trading Centre in Byeshembe LCI, Kazo Town Council during a security operation aimed at curbing the movement of animal products amid a Foot and Mouth Disease alert in the district.
Authorities say the consignment was immediately confiscated and later set ablaze as a precautionary measure to prevent possible spread of the disease and protect public health.
One of the suspects has been identified as Rosemary Kasumu, a resident of Byeshembe Cell in Kazo Town Council, who was allegedly found selling part of the meat to members of the public. She was arrested alongside another business person linked to the transportation of the consignment.
Police emphasized that the action was part of ongoing efforts to enforce animal movement restrictions and ensure compliance with veterinary health guidelines during the outbreak risk period.
Investigations are ongoing to establish the source of the meat and whether more individuals are involved in the illegal distribution network.
