MBARARA – Police in Mbarara City have arrested a 35-year-old woman over allegations that she attempted to orchestrate the theft of a baby from Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.
The suspect, identified as Ruth Tindimwebwa, is being held as detectives investigate the alleged attempted child theft.
According to the Mbarara City District Police Commander, SP Kenneth Kabwigo, the suspect allegedly approached a hospital cleaner and offered him UGX 1 million in exchange for stealing a baby boy from the hospital’s Toto Ward.
Police said the cleaner rejected the offer and immediately reported the matter to hospital management, who in turn alerted security authorities.
The prompt action led to the arrest of Tindimwebwa before the alleged plan could be carried out.
Investigators have since launched inquiries to establish the motive behind the alleged attempt and whether the suspect may have been acting alone or as part of a wider criminal network.
Police commended the hospital cleaner for reporting the incident, saying his vigilance helped prevent what could have been a serious crime.
The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue, and authorities say she is expected to be arraigned in court once inquiries are completed.
Police have also urged the public to remain vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious activity, particularly in health facilities where newborn babies and other vulnerable patients require maximum protection.
