RUKUNGIRI – Police in Rukungiri District have launched investigations into the death of a shamba worker who was found dead along a roadside after reportedly going on a waragi drinking spree.
The deceased, identified only as Mutabaruka, is alleged to have received Shs2,000 from his employer before spending the money on locally distilled alcohol, commonly known as waragi.
According to preliminary information, Mutabaruka was later found lying dead along the roadside in Rugoma Cell, Southern Ward, Kebisoni Town Council, prompting residents to alert authorities.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, and police have commenced investigations to establish the exact cause.
Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime confirmed the incident, saying officers responded to the scene and inquiries are underway.
“Investigations into the incident are ongoing,” Tumushime said.
Police have not yet established whether the death was directly linked to alcohol consumption or if there were other contributing factors. The body was taken for a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Authorities have urged members of the public to avoid excessive alcohol consumption and to seek immediate medical attention whenever someone becomes unconscious after drinking.
The incident has shocked residents of Rugoma Cell, who are now awaiting the outcome of police investigations.
