Leadership Tensions Force Lango Cultural Assembly to Postpone General Meeting

In a move that highlights the ongoing turmoil within the Lango Cultural Foundation, the general assembly of the cultural institution has been abruptly postponed. The paramount chief, known as Won Nyaci, cited the need for a medical checkup in Kampala as the reason for the indefinite delay.

The meeting was intended to address critical matters, including the approval of a new cabinet, the election commission members, and the elders’ council (Etogo), as proposed by the Won Nyaci.

The recent months have been marked by internal strife, with the Won Nyaci dismissing and appointing key officials, leading to disputes and pushback from council members. Last month, the prime minister was dismissed and replaced, setting off a chain reaction of appointments and refusals that only added to the disarray.

During a previous General Assembly in September, the council expressed its disapproval of the newly proposed cabinet, further deepening the divisions within the institution. The matter was postponed for further consideration.

As the assembly was set to convene, Speaker Benson Dila Oyuku announced the indefinite postponement, adding that he had not received the lists of election commission members and council of elders, which were expected to be presented.

The Lango Cultural Institution has been grappling with discontent and calls for a change in leadership due to allegations of mismanagement. These internal disputes have resulted in the postponement of the assembly, further prolonging the resolution of the ongoing crisis.

It is worth noting that there are two rival Won Nyaci figures in the Lango region, further complicating the situation. Eng. Michael Odongo Okune is recognized as the legally elected Won Nyaci, while the court has declared the Lango Cultural Foundation a non-entity.

The future of the Lango Cultural Institution remains uncertain as leadership conflicts persist, and the cultural assembly remains in disarray.
