Nsambya Furniture Workshop — also known as Nsambya Furniture Store — is a leading custom furniture-making enterprise based in the Nsambya neighborhood of Kampala, Uganda.

Origins & Founder

The workshop was founded by Ssegujja Ivan, born on April 8, 2000, in Mukono District. What began as a modest roadside carpentry point has since grown into a thriving enterprise. Ivan has built the brand through his dedication to craftsmanship and by training youth through hands-on apprenticeships.

What Sets Them Apart

  • Custom-Made Craftsmanship: From beds and sofas to wardrobes and dining sets, each piece is tailor-made using locally sourced wood such as mahogany, muvule, and other sustainably harvested species.

  • Local Identity, Modern Appeal: Their designs merge Ugandan cultural motifs with contemporary aesthetics, appealing to both traditional and urban lifestyles.

  • Digital Engagement: Nsambya Furniture Workshop actively uses digital platforms — including a website, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, WhatsApp, and Google Business — to showcase work, interact with customers, and attract clients, including those in the diaspora.

  • Local Economic Impact: The business creates employment and apprenticeship opportunities for young artisans, contributing to skills development and community growth.

  • Informal to Formal Transition: From its humble origins, the workshop has transformed into a semi-formal operation with a showroom, finishing areas, and a registered location along Ggaba Road near Nsambya Catholic Church.

Location & Operations

  • Address: Nsambya, along Ggaba Road, opposite the Total petrol station and next to Nsambya Catholic Church.

  • Facilities: Carpentry workshop, showroom, and finishing section equipped with circular saws, sanding machines, and workbenches.

  • Workforce: Employs 15–25 workers, including master carpenters, apprentices, upholsterers, and finishing staff. Training is largely informal and on-the-job, with many artisans working without formal contracts.

Vision & Future Direction

  • Growth Plans: Expansion of production capacity, launch of eco-conscious product lines, and establishment of a larger training and showroom facility.

  • Cultural Impact: Aiming to elevate the “Made in Uganda” brand, the workshop positions itself as a symbol of quality, youth entrepreneurship, and cultural authenticity in the East African furniture market.

In essence, Nsambya Furniture Workshop is more than a carpentry business — it’s a movement in Ugandan craftsmanship, blending tradition, innovation, youth empowerment, and digital visibility to redefine furniture making in Kampala and beyond.
