BABY’S FIRST NIN! Minister Nyamutoro, Eddy Kenzo Register Three-Week-Old Child in National ID System

KAMPALA, Uganda — Uganda’s Minister of State for Energy and Mineral Development (Minerals), Phiona Nyamutoro, and her husband, Eddy Kenzo, have registered their three-week-old baby for a National Identification Number (NIN) in a move aimed at supporting the ongoing national birth registration campaign.

The registration was announced by National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA), which is currently spearheading a nationwide exercise to increase birth registration and ensure that more children obtain legal identification from an early age.

According to NIRA, the government is offering free birth certificates to children below six months of age as part of the campaign. The agency has urged parents and guardians across the country to take advantage of the initiative by visiting registration centres in their communities.

In a statement shared on social media, NIRA confirmed that Hon. Nyamutoro and Kenzo had successfully registered their newborn child for a NIN, highlighting the importance of early registration in securing a child’s legal identity and access to essential services.

Officials also noted that children below nine months can be registered without being physically present at registration centres. Parents are only required to provide their National Identification Numbers and complete the necessary application forms.

The government hopes the campaign will boost birth registration rates across Uganda and help ensure that every child is recognized in the national records from birth.

As the exercise continues nationwide, authorities are encouraging all eligible parents to register their children and obtain free birth certificates before the six-month eligibility window expires.
