Lukwago Declares Fresh Mayoral Bid, Warns Rivals He Is “Here to Stay”

Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has officially declared his intention to seek another term in the upcoming elections, vowing to defend his seat against all challengers.

Speaking with characteristic fire, Lukwago dismissed talk of his political retirement and warned those plotting to unseat him to prepare for a fierce contest.

“When Ham Kiggundu sees Lukwago, he wishes him only death, but I want to assure him that I am here to stay and I am not going anywhere,” he declared. “Even if it’s Gen. Museveni standing as Lord Mayor, I will defeat him badly.”

Lukwago, who has branded himself as the “true opposition voice in Kampala,” said his political journey has been defined by suffering and resilience.

“I have suffered a lot, even to the point of security tearing my clothes apart. Whoever thought I will retreat from representing Kampala is dreaming,” he told his supporters.

The long-serving mayor also revealed that he has received intelligence reports indicating that prominent city tycoons are backing efforts to replace him.

“I know Kampala tycoons like Ham Kiggundu are behind Eng. Balimwezo of NUP who wants to take my seat, but let them know—this battle will not be easy,” Lukwago charged.

With this bold declaration, Lukwago has set the stage for what promises to be a heated mayoral race. His strong words suggest that Kampala’s political arena is bracing for another showdown, with the veteran opposition figure determined to prove once again that his grip on City Hall remains unshaken.
