Mawokota North Member of Parliament Hillary Kiyaga, popularly known as Dr. Hilderman, has reportedly made a surprise move to reconcile with National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine.
According to exclusive reports, Kiyaga recently approached the party leader, asking for a second chance to contest on the NUP ticket in the forthcoming elections. He is said to have admitted to past mistakes and promised renewed commitment to both parliamentary duties and party activities.
“Hon. Kiyaga explained that if given another opportunity, he will concentrate fully on strengthening the party’s work and be more active in parliament than he has been in the last five years,” a source close to the developments revealed.
For years, the relationship between Bobi Wine and Kiyaga has been strained. The tension deepened when Kiyaga openly criticized the NUP president, sparking suspicion within the party that he could be working as a spy. His absence from the party headquarters in Kavule further widened the rift.
Analysts also point to Kiyaga’s perceived soft spot for former NUP Vice President Mathias Mpuuga as another source of discomfort. At the height of internal wrangles, Kiyaga was often viewed as aligning himself more with Mpuuga’s camp than with Bobi Wine’s inner circle.
Despite the frosty ties, his latest gesture of humility suggests a desire to mend bridges and restore his standing within Uganda’s largest opposition party. Whether Bobi Wine and the NUP leadership will accept his apology and allow him to run under their ticket again remains to be seen.
The reconciliation attempt comes at a time when NUP is consolidating its position ahead of the 2026 general elections, with loyalty and unity being key priorities for the party.
However, with former MP, Hon Amelia Kyambadde returning after winning the NRM primaries, NUP and Dr. Hilderman of given the card will find it particularly difficult to reclaim the seat as she’s got a strong support base in the area.
