Sources reveal that Mityana Municipality MP Francis Zaake is unwilling to join any political fights targeting Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago or campaign against him in favour of fellow NUP member Eng. Balimwezo during Kampala rallies.
According to people close to him, Zaake is taking a more cautious and mature approach this time. He reportedly does not want to be associated with groups inside the National Unity Platform (NUP) who are seen to be working aggressively to remove Lukwago from the Lord Mayor’s office.
Lukwago’s Support During Zaake’s Toughest Moments
Information indicates that during the Katuntu Committee proceedings—when there were fears that some individuals in Parliament leadership wanted Zaake permanently removed—Lukwago stood firmly by his side.
For several weeks, the Lord Mayor put aside his own responsibilities to escort and defend Zaake throughout the sessions. Observers say the two leaders endured criticism and humiliation together, with Lukwago showing more consistent personal support for Zaake than some members of Zaake’s own party.
Soft Spot for Lukwago Within NUP
Although Lukwago is not formally a member of NUP, several figures inside the party are said to have a soft spot for him. They point to his long-time involvement in the wider opposition struggle and his solidarity during difficult moments—especially during the years of political pressure and clashes with President Museveni’s government.
Analysts note that this history has earned Lukwago respect across different opposition camps, making some NUP members hesitant to openly campaign against him despite internal tensions and competing ambitions for the Kampala Lord Mayor seat.
