ZOMBO, Uganda — Thirteen people narrowly escaped death on Tuesday afternoon when a taxi they were travelling in plunged into River Nyagak in Zombo District.
The crash occurred at around 12:45pm at Nyagak River and involved a drone taxi, registration number UBJ 956G, which was en route from Hoima to Alangi.
Confirming the incident, Michael Kananura, the Public Relations Officer for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, said the accident happened after the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle.
“It is alleged that upon reaching River Nyagak, the driver who was travelling from Hoima to Alangi failed to brake while speeding, lost control of the vehicle and plunged into the river,” SP Rusoke said.
All 13 occupants of the taxi, including the driver, sustained injuries in the crash. Police confirmed that two victims suffered serious injuries, while 11 others sustained minor injuries.
“They were all rescued and rushed for medical attention. Two of the victims sustained serious injuries while the rest suffered minor injuries,” SP Rusoke added.
Police said investigations into the exact cause of the crash are ongoing as authorities continue to assess the circumstances surrounding the incident.
