Uganda’s diplomatic landscape entered a new chapter on Tuesday after President Yoweri Museveni appointed seasoned diplomat Adonia Ayebare as the country’s new Minister of Foreign Affairs in the latest cabinet reshuffle for the 2026–2031 term.

At 59, Ayebare brings decades of experience to one of Uganda’s most strategic ministries. Before becoming a respected diplomat, he worked as a journalist, a background many analysts say sharpened his understanding of regional politics and international communication.

Over the years, he has represented Uganda in key diplomatic missions, including serving as ambassador to Rwanda and Burundi, while also earning recognition for his expertise in multilateral diplomacy.

Ayebare replaces Jeje Odongo, who has led Uganda’s foreign affairs docket during a period marked by shifting regional alliances and security challenges in East Africa.

The reshuffle also saw President Museveni retain Jessica Alupo as Vice President and Robinah Nabbanja as Prime Minister, signaling continuity in key areas of government leadership.

News of Ayebare’s appointment was warmly received across Uganda’s diplomatic circles, with fellow diplomats and regional leaders praising the decision as timely.

An African Union spokesperson described him as “a skilled negotiator and bridge-builder,” noting that his experience could strengthen Uganda’s voice on the continental and global stage.

His appointment comes at a critical moment for Uganda, which continues to navigate regional security concerns while also chairing the Non-Aligned Movement, a role that places the country at the center of major international discussions involving developing nations.
